What does fashion mean to me? It means being able to tell my story through clothes. It means showing people where I’ve been, where I’ve come from and where I want to go. It means expressing yourself through different styles, patterns, textures, words and colors. It means daring to bend the rules. It means mixing and matching to your own beat. It means daring to be bold or daring to simplify. It means venturing out and trying new things. It means not caring what other people think and being comfortable with yourself and your own style. It means not being afraid of being different and always being true to you.
As an ambassador for American Eagle Outfitters, I want to encourage you to be yourself, to find your style and just dare to be you. AEO is amazing because they promote natural beauty and launch campaigns like #WeAllCan, #AerieReal and #LoveYourRealSelfie. To be partnered with a company that works so hard to promote and encourage the younger generations is simply amazing. It’s hard to find a company who truly cares for the well being of the men, women, boys and girls who wear their clothing and I am so happy to be a part of the movement. My hope is that I can inspire others with my story and to show them that you don’t need to be afraid of what others may think and to stand up and be yourself, because you don’t know where that road may lead you in the future. For me, my fashion story all started with a pair of shoes.
I’ve always loved fashion and style. I remember one of the first times I ventured out with my personal style was in middle school. While shopping one day, I came across this pair of canvas, chunky heeled shoes. The moment I saw them, I knew I had to have them. I spent the night picking out the perfect outfit and finally settled on a jean jacket, white denim pants and a patterned shirt (more than likely, all AEO). I felt so confident that day. I loved every piece of my outfit and how it all went together. Fast forward to lunch. Not even halfway through the day, a group of girls came up to me in the bathroom, mocking my shoes. As a 12 year old, that’s normally when the devestation, the embarrassment and negative self image would have started to set in, but there was just something about how those shoes made me feel and how I felt in them that none of that set in for me. I just looked at that girl right in her eyes and said “yeah, well I like them” shrugged my shoulders, walked away, and of course, wore those suckers the next day. The funny part? That girl now follows me on Instagram for fashion and beauty advice.
It’s so interesting how those moments leave such a big impact on us. I mean, what if I would have let those girls’ words actually cut skin deep or affect my new found style from then on out? What if I would have decided that to dress to just fit in would have been enough for me? What I learned is that when you are confident in yourself and feel amazing in your clothes, it shines through in other ways. If you love something, style it and try it! Don’t worry about what other people will think. Dare to be different and venture out. Dare to just be you!
Its crazy to think that through all of those fashion adventures, at one point I became a style ambassador for American Eagle Outfitters. Who would have ever thought that the girl who got made fun of for her style choices in the girls bathroom would now be a face of AEO? It all comes back to staying true to yourself, taking risks and feeling confident in your style. Talking about confidence, this outfit is one of those outfits for me. I mixed and matched a couple of different styles and kind of paired all of my current favorites together and just went for it. A black choker shirt, bomber jacket, lace up flats, hi-rise jeans and mirrored sunglasses … I think yes! Also, this particular pair of hi-rise denim is ah-mazing. I suggest getting a size that fits a bit snug and breaking them in. Trust me on this. Wear that denim for a day and it will break in and form perfectly to your unique shape. I love tucking my shirts into my hi-rise jeans and absolutely love this chocker collared one. I went with a light green bomber jacket (AEO also has some really pretty pastel ones right now) mirrored sunglasses, lace up flats and a simple black bag. Remember, step out of your comfort zone and just go for it. Who would have thought that boho flats, an edgy top and trendy glasses would all look so good together? Try new things and don’t apologize for it! I hope you all have a wonderful week and don’t forget to take it on with a bit of bold!
